Playlist for What the Folk! (PBS-FM, Melbourne, Australia) for Thursday January 25, 2024. Roger Holdsworth filling in for Susi Lanagan. As you might imagine, today's What the Folk! starts by exploring aspects of the contentious day that occurs tomorrow: January 26th. Whether we regard it as Australia Day, Invasion Day, or Survival Day, this should be a time to reflect on our national identity: the conflicting ideas of who we are, and what we want to celebrate and mourn. We start with music from several Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, interwoven with other musical comments on the controversies about the day. And then we play some local and international string-centred music.
