This is a day that traditionally marks changes of seasons, particularly in the northern hemisphere. But from that, it has become a symbol of social change: a day marking hopes for rising up and renewal. As we have done in recent years, today's Global Village explores music associated with May. Some of that is about old traditions associated with the time of the year; some of it is about songs of protest, complaint, struggle, organising but also of celebration and hope. This music takes us to Australia, England, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, France, the USA, Spain and Portugal.
